THE DARK by Lemony Snicket and Illustrated by Jon Klassen is In.Cre.Di.Ble. How did I not know this book existed? There are few picture books that give me goose bumps and this is certainly one of those. The book is about darkness and one little boy’s pervasive fear. Snicket’s writing is gentle and touching. He personifies the dark whilst maintaining its elusive and mysterious qualities. In the end, little boy learns to live in a world where there is darkness. It’s a great book for kids; there is a lesson in it, but not a didactic one. The illustrations are unique. I love the colour scheme and the way the darkness highlights the action. Klassen’s rendering of the story is clever and true to form.

This is a great blog. My class loved this book and they were 11! Do you like the other books Klassen has wrote? Who are your favorite picture book authors? I’m studying a bit on wordless picture books at the minute, it’s a fairly cool category within the masses of other picture books!
So sorry for the tardy reply, my email was down *grumble grumble*. I do like Klassen’s I Want My Hat Back, though I am not as fanatical about it as others in the industry are. As for favourite authors, where do I start? So I have to say I LOVE Peter Carnavan — he’s clever and lyrical and masterful at embedding emotion into children’s picture books, which is important and not as common as I would like. Also, Drew Daywalt is great. Libby Gleeson — I Am Thomas is brilliant and I am sorry to see it is not more popular. As much as I groan about it, my shout out also has to go to Eric Hill. The Spot books are old and simple but my son loves them and he does what he does well. Gosh these are just a few… there are so many more that I would happily rave about for hours… Wordless picture books are amazing when they are done right. I have to admit, I’m not very across these but I hear more and more about their popularity and I’ve a sneaking suspicion I will be looking into them soon.
I am Thomas is such a powerful book, makes you really think what life would be like if you rejected all authority. Did you ever read ‘The Red Tree’ by Shaun Tan?
Indeed I have. I actually heard Tan briefly talk about it at a conference I attended a couple of years ago!
